More positive COVID-19 cases reported at Avalon Halfway House

The total number of positives at the facility is now eight -- seven residents and one staff member.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Dr. Annette Rodriguez, health director of the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District, reported Monday that more positive coronavirus tests have come back from the Avalon Halfway House in Corpus Christi.

Rodriguez said the total number of positives at the facility is now eight -- seven residents and one staff member.

The situation is definitely a concern not only to those at the facility but also to their relatives.

"I know all of them are there for a purpose and most of them need to be there for a certain reason or another, but I wish they could try to space them out more," said Heather Wallace, the mother of a halfway house resident. "And I know grocery stores put up those plexiglass between them and their customers, maybe they could do something along that line on the beds, or put dividers between the chairs."

Rodriguez said local experts have visited the facility's officials and said they were actually impressed that they had a plan in place to deal with an outbreak. Residents who have tested positive are separated from the others as much as possible.
