Spring into your garden projects

With Spring creeping into the Coastal Bend, now is the time to transition your plants out of the Winter state.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We are just days away from the official start of a new season, but with our South Texas weather it's not too early to spring forward into garden projects.

Executive Director for the South Texas Botanical Gardens Michael Womack shared some tips and tricks for a flourishing garden with 3NEWS.

"The first steps in getting your yard ready for Spring, is to make sure you've cut back any plants that were damaged during the freeze," Womack said.

You may already see new growth at the base of the plant even if you haven't done this step, but cutting your plants back to where you can see green stems, allows proper blooming to take place.

"The next thing you're going to want to do is, make sure everything is well watered right now," he said. "So again, thinking about your water restrictions, watering on the right days, but give everything a really good drink of water."

With Stage 2 water restrictions looming over the Coastal Bend, it is also a great time to practice alternate ways to take care of your garden.

"You can always hand water, so if you're putting in a new plant, you're going to be needing to do that anyways several times a week to make sure it has plenty of water when it's first starting to grow because it has a very small root system," Womack said.

Although temperatures are rising and that means South Texas summer heat is nearby, these are ideal conditions for Mother Nature.

"Now that it's warm, our grass is growing, our plants are growing; it is the right time to go ahead and fertilize your lawn and your landscape," he said.
