ROCKPORT, Texas — A group of college students from Texas Tech University were in Rockport on Tuesday after helping the city to save about $50,000.

The group was part of a project researching how cities can rebuild after suffering a massive flood such as when Rockport went through as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

Since October of 2018, the students have been working on the project, and the most significant lesson they've learned about the city is that it is necessarily one big sponge.

"Where there's areas that are left open or spongey to allow water to infiltrate down into the water table," Dr. Melissa Currie said. "We did it as an outreach to the community. to have a better experience for the students."

According to Rockport Mayor Patrick Rios, the research conducted by the students would have cost the city about 50,000 if they had hired a consultant firm.
