Three men plead guilty to federal drug charges for trying to bring cocaine across the border inside car batteries

Two of the men were helping to switch the batteries in Brownsville and send the drugs north.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Three men plead guilty to federal drug charges for trying to bring cocaine across the border inside of car batteries:

Mikeal Jovany Phillips, 35

Juan Andres Rodriguez-Murillo, 31

Christopher Sheffield, 38

38-year-old Christopher Sheffield drove to the Sarita checkpoint where agents found the drugs. After the investigation, it was revealed Mikeal Phillips and Juan Murillo were helping to switch the batteries in Brownsville and send the drugs north. All three face up to 40 years in federal prison and a $ 5 million fine.

Sentencing set for 2024, and each face up to 40 years in federal prison and up to a $5 million fine.
