CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Several people stopped by the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery to pay their respects and honor soldiers who served in the Vietnam war Friday, in honor of Vietnam Veterans Day.
March 29 was the day the last American troops pulled out of Vietnam back in 1973, but it wasn't until 2017 that the day was designated as a National Day of Remembrance.
3NEWS spoke with Cold War veteran Daniel Jarvis who says he is glad Vietnam veterans are being honored because years ago many were not recognized for their service.
"Those Vietnam veterans are very special because unlike all the other wars, same as the Korean war, they were kind of pushed aside from what was going on," Jarvis said. "I remember as a kid when they came home, I saw it in person when they would walk down the street and people would spit on them and call them 'baby killers' and all this, but they were surviving their country."
