Waves Resort Corpus Christi bringing new amenities to Padre Island

Pets now have a place to play at the Bark Park, and golf enthusiasts can work on their swing at the new driving range.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — $8 million worth of renovations have gone into the water park on Padre Island and there's a name change to go with it all -- Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi is now going to be known as the Waves Resort Corpus Christi featuring Schlitterbahn.

The whole facility went bankrupt in 2018 and was purchased by IBC Bank. The newly-renovated resort is having a soft opening this weekend for its summer season.

Once the resort formerly known as Schlitterbahn was put under new ownership the renovations began. Their thought behind the new changes was to make Waves Resort a place people want to go to year round.

"Yes, we do have an amazing water park, but we're more than just a water park," said Lisa Marie Barocas, a representative from Waves Resort. "We're an all-around entertainment resort."

That entertainment starts with things like their new 42-foot-tall outdoor screen. Now people can come for movie nights or float in the water and watch a film.

Plus, pets now have a place to play at the Bark Park, and golf enthusiasts can work on their swing at the new driving range.

If soaking in the sun isn't for you, the facility has added brand new ballrooms, an updated menu at their restaurant and an E-Sports gaming center.

"We are talking video games like Halo, Fortnite, and we are going to have Twitch streaming parties there, so that's going to be an incredible asset here," Barocas said.

Water park representatives said most renovations will be complete by Memorial Day Weekend. On Saturday the resort will be hosting their soft open where you can see all of the amenities, plus selective water features.
