Islanders' March Madness appearance ends a long wait for Westbrook, Chadwick

Westbrook was on the 2020 team that got their chance taken away by COVID. Chadwick is in the dance for the first time in 23 years.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women basketball team's long wait for March Madness is finally about to be over.

The islanders were on the practice court for the final time Wednesday as they get set to head to Los Angeles Thursday. It's extra special for fifth-year graduate student Alecia Westbrook who missed out on a chance at the tournament back in 2020 when COVID canceled the whole thing when the Islanders were the one-seed in the Southland Tournament.

Head Coach Royce Chadwick is making his eighth tournament appearance, but the first with Texas A&M-CC and first in 23 years after going seven consecutive seasons with Stephen F. Austin. Both said they're cherishing this run to the dance.

It's a tough task for the Islanders as they take on the top seed in the region, the USC Trojans on their homecourt. Not to mention going up against ESPN's national player of the year runner-up, JuJu Watkins.

The Islanders and Chadwick know they're going to have to make Watkins as uncomfortable as possible in order to have a chance to stay in the game.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will face USC Saturday at 3:30 PM. the game can be seen on ESPN and will also be shown at the Islanders' Watch Party at Brewster Street Southside.
