Affordable summer programs in the Coastal Bend

Several organizations are offering a variety of activities for different ages but are going the extra mile by making their programs more affordable to help families.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Summer is around the corner which means after-school programs are coming to an end. Registration for summer programs have begun but spots are filling up fast.

Several organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Bend and the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve are offering a variety of activities for different ages but are going the extra mile by making their programs more affordable to help families.

Scotty Sayre with the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Bend said it's important that summer programs are accessible to all children.

"We really keep those costs down to help out some families," Sayre said. "There are a few scholarships available for some people who might need assistance."

Their eight week summer program costs $400. The fee will cover activities, field trips and even healthy meals.

"It's amazing to see how far that your child can go in our program with that," Sayre said.

Sayre urges parents if they're interested to register their child online as soon as possible.

"We only have 150 spots and we're filling up pretty quickly. I think we're already int he 90 spots range, so we got about 60 spots left," Sayre said.

If your child is more into nature, the Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve is providing several hands-on learning programs this summer.

"It is about the kids having a safe environment to learn about the natural resources, the ecosystems, the estuaries in their own backyard,"  Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve Manager Tonya Whatley said.

The program has several activities for children ranging from five to 15 years old. Each program cost just $99.

"We have a wait list, so maybe you didn't get into the class you wanted to get into, but you can sign up for the waitlist," Whatley said.
