Effects of 4th of July fireworks on our veterans with PTSD

Fireworks set off loud noises and smells that could potentially trigger traumas for veterans dealing with PTSD.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fourth of July celebrations are expected to light up the sky but residents should keep local Veterans in mind during the holiday.

Fireworks that set off loud noises, smells, and the sight of sparks could potentially trigger traumas for Veterans dealing with PTSD.

Dr. Wendy Crook-Abel of the VA Corpus Christi Specialty Clinic specializes in the treatment of the disorder and explained that at times veterans will isolate themselves during PTSD episodes and not seek help, but the disorder doesn't have to be a permanent situation.

"They may have flashbacks as a result of it. Nightmares that night. They often will get very irritable, want to socially isolate due to those reminders." Dr. Crook-Abel said.

Dr. Crook-Abel explained that residents can reduce noise by using sparklers, asking if their friends or neighbors are Veterans, and avoid surprising them with fireworks.

VA offices will be closed during the holiday but if a Vet is experiencing an episode they can try a few techniques at home.

Crook-Abel suggests they find a quiet place, use headphones or ear plugs that eliminate noise, and slow their breathing to calm their reaction.

Veterans can also call the crisis hotline at 1-800-273-8255 for further help.
