Athletes participate in Special Olympics swimming competition

Members and winners of the competition will advance to the statewide tournament.

Corpus Christi (kIII News) — A total of 180 athletes participated Thursday in the 2018 Special Olympics swimming competition at the Corpus Christi Natatorium.

Thursday was day one of the four-day aquatic meet.

The tournament focuses on developmental skills such as walking and assistance in swimming.

Laine Meyers has been involved with the Special Olympics program for 38 years and it has a significant meaning to her.

"It's just my passion. All my life I have learned so much from them. Their determination to get out here and do the very best that they can. They love it. They love swimming. That's one thing they absolutely love," Meyers said.

Members and winners of the competition will advance to the statewide tournament, the Special Olympics Fall Classic, which will be held in October.
