Children get hands-on experience during Coastal Bend G.I.S. Day

Students who participated in Wednesday's event took part in hands-on activities, seminars, and presentations to learn more about G.I.S technology.

Corpus Christi (KIII News) — Children and members of the Corpus Christi community were out Wednesday learning about Geographic Information Systems at the Del Mar College Economic Development Center.

The 20th annual Coastal Bend G.I.S Day is meant to educate both young minds and others about the G.I.S. program. G.I.S is used for mapping coordinates and is specifically helpful for land surveyors, engineers, pilots, and even our local government.

According to organizers, it's important to learn or be aware of G.I.S. because it's a part of our everyday lives.

"Nowadays it's very common for local governments to use this technology to try and make decisions, and it's the community's right to understand kind of how our governments are making these decisions. How they come to these conclusions to lead us the way they do," Spatial Lab Coordinator Bryan Scott Gillis said.
