City leaders took time Tuesday to recognize and honor the upcoming Special Olympics.

"This training and competition provides these athletes opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community," City Councilman Michael Hunter said.

The Texas Spring Games will take place at Flour Bluff High School.

16 counties from across the state are eligible to participate, and more than 500 are signed up for the games.

The Opening Ceremony starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 7.
