Del Mar College offering free dental clinic services

Del Mar College's Dental Hygiene program is encouraging people to apply to get free dental services from their students.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Get your smile on!

Del Mar College is back with their chance to get your teeth cleaned for free.

Misty Wharton, assistant professor of Dental Hygiene at Del Mar College says this is a great opportunity for the community to get free dental health services while also helping the program train dental hygiene students and future dental professionals.

"Everything is supervised by dental hygiene faculty and a dentist on staff. This is how they get their hands on training, so it's very important for the community to dedicate their time," she said.

Here are just some of the services that you can receive:

  • blood pressure screenings

  • free dental cleanings

  • X-rays

  • sealants

  • fluoride treatments

Approximately 48 dental hygiene students will be able to provide services for as many as 20 people each.

Wharton says the community will be able to receive the same level of care as they would at their regular dentist.

Efren Mesa is a first-year student who says the public should take advantage of the wide variety of services offered by the program.

You can contact the clinic by phone to set up an hour-long qualifying appointment today. Efran says you will then be matched with a student who will provide you with supervised services for a grade.

"We need the hands-on experience so whenever we graduate, we are fully prepared for the real world."

The program is available throughout the rest of the spring semester, which ends in early May. The services will then be continued once the fall semester begins.
