Former Coastal Bend priest ordered to pay victim $4 million as civil suit wraps Friday

The verdict came right before 5 p.m., 3NEWS is told.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A former Diocese of Corpus Christi priest will have to pay his victim $4 million after a jury found Friday in favor of the woman he was convicted of raping as a 13-year-old girl.

The outcome of the civil suit was decided right before 5 p.m., 3NEWS was told.

Stephen Dougherty is currently serving a 60-year sentence in a Waco prison after being convicted for aggravated sexual assault in Bee County.

Because she was underage when the crime occurred, the women is known as Jane Doe in court records.

"We are just trying to get a verdict against him because he's a very wealthy man, even though he is in prison," said Jane Doe's attorney Robert Sigler said Wednesday. "Under civil law, we are entitled to recover monetary damages from him. That's what we're trying to do."
