CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Gary Smith has been a devoted member of the Rockport Volunteer Fire Department the past 70 years.
The volunteer firefighter was honored Monday by the Aransas County Commissioners Court for his seven decades of service, and his enduring spirit of volunteerism.
Now, Apr. 22 will be known as "Gary Smith Day" in honor of the elderly man, who is also one of the oldest firefighters in the county.
A declaration for the announcement refers to him as "a living legend whose legacy will forever be etched in the community's history."
The Gary Smith Day proclamation also states that the firefighter's steadfast leadership, experience and unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of others is a beacon of inspiration to the community.
