New downtown market 'Community Grocery' to offer convenience for residents

While it won't eliminate the need to take a trip to H-E-B or Walmart, the new market will greatly provide the necessities within walking distance for residents.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Downtown Corpus Christi will soon be home to a new market called, 'Community Grocery'.

It'll be located at the corner of Peoples Street and Chaparral Street in the space previously occupied by Allgood Fitness.

The new endeavor is part of the ongoing effort to bring new businesses to this part of the city.

The Community Grocery store will offer locally grown food and other products.

It's something that has a lot of folks who live and work downtown like, resident Bradley Dick, pretty excited because the best thing it will offer is convenience.

"I think its a great thing, I think downtown is in need of a thing like this, and glad its coming along," Dick said.

He is one of about 1,200 people who call downtown home.

He lives at the Nueces Lofts, so currently, if he wants to get groceries the closest option is anywhere from 2 to 3 miles away.

While it won't eliminate the need to take a trip to H-E-B or Walmart every once in a while, the new business will greatly provide the necessities and will only take a brief walk.

"Feels like downtown is really putting effort to improve and make it something special," Dick said.

3NEWS got a look inside at the progress being made with the construction inside the new market.

There will be an open air cooler where you can grab eggs, a café area, wine racks and even a ramen bar in the back.

"Everybody is super excited downtown and we're very happy he's here," said Andrew Pena, owner of nearby business, Full Send Barbeque, next to the Goldfish on Taylor Street.

"We're about to hit 6 months, with the Community Grocery store coming in its a huge convenience for us," he said.

Daniela Campos with the Downtown Management District said the DMD is able to help attract new businesses to this part of the city through the use of 'TIRZ 3' dollars.

"One of our big missions is to get people downtown and create a pedestrian-friendly space for people to come downtown and enjoy that's one of the things we are really focused on," said Campos.

"We had the recent opening of El Camino on Chaparral Street and Gallery 41 located in the Art Center, we also have coming up soon is Marty Mcpies," she said.

The reinvestment zone was created back in 2008 to help revitalize many of the vacant spaces downtown.

Pena said it helped him.

"Downtown Management has been helping us as business owners as well they've been doing a great job," he said.

The Downtown Management District hopes this new addition will help bolster even more interest downtown.

The Community Grocery aims to open this summer.
