Corpus Christi Greek Festival wraps up successful weekend

Residents enjoyed the three-day long festival and organizers celebrated the success of their 60th annual festival.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Sunday was the last day of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church's 60th Greek festival!

Residents flooded downtown to celebrate the weekend-long event.

Organizers said a few Greek families came together over a hundred years ago and ultimately founded a community that has grown tremendously here.

What started as just a bake sale has grown into the church's largest fundraiser of the year.

3NEWS spoke with festival committee member, George Spentzos about the community's support for the celebration.

"I think it's important to give back to the community because we've been supported by Corpus Christi from when our grandparents first came here. This is our chance to showcase what our faith is to our youth. Yes, we all live here in the United States, but part of the Greek culture still lives on. It seems every year we've been blessed... more and more come out. Our food, our pastries, and our traditions carry on."

While those traditions are being celebrated by community members who made their way downtown, everyone has been invited to immerse themselves in the Greek culture.

"Greeks are very family oriented. you're welcomed into our home; you sit down with us. everybody is under one tent, watch our children dance enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of beer and just be part of our family for one weekend," said Spentzos.

Greek Fest is not the only time to get your hands on authentic Greek pastries here in town.

The ladies of the church's Delphi Club host bake sales during the holidays and Easter each year.
