Gregory mother arrested, charged with murdering four-year-old

26-year-old Tawana Roberson is currently in the San Patricio County Jail on a $400,000 bond.

GREGORY, Texas — A Gregory, Texas, woman is behind bars accused of capital murder in connection with the death her four-year-old child.

According to the San Patricio County Sheriff's Office, 26-year-old Tawana Roberson was arrested Thursday by Texas Rangers and charged with capital murder. She is currently in the San Patricio County Jail on a $400,000 bond.

Texas Rangers are assisting the Gregory Police Department and Child Protective Services in an investigation into the death of a four-year-old boy. The boy was rushed to an emergency room Tuesday night and transferred to Driscoll Children's Hospital, where he later died.

At this time, it is unclear why the boy was rushed to the emergency room.

"I think it's really a sad situation," neighbor Moises Moreno said. "You can see kids out here all the time. We still have a lot of kids but it looked like doing alright with them. They all go to school. She'd pick them up, take them back. It's just a messed up situation."

It was Tuesday afternoon when police said Roberson took her four-year-old son to a Portland emergency room complaining that he was sick. Emergency room personnel termed the case suspicious and notified the police.

"He was transported to Driscoll Children's Hospital via Driscoll Children's Hospital's ambulance. I then met the family and EMS personnel at Driscoll Children's Hospital," Gregory Police Chief Tony Cano said. "I was notified that the child was pronounced dead."

Cano said with the help of the Texas Rangers, they made a break in their case.

"After three days of investigation and interviews and such, we were able to obtain a warrant for capital murder and arrested the young boy's mother," Cano said. "She was taken into custody yesterday evening and was transported to the San Patricio County Sheriff's Office."

The rest of Roberson's children were removed by CPS on Wednesday.

"Currently the seven siblings are in foster care and all their needs are currently being met," said John Lennan of Family Protective Services. "And a case has been filed in San Patricio County Court to where a judge will be overseeing the case involving the children in foster care."

The case is still being investigated. 3News will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
