More than 200 kids receive bikes from Lulac's 40th annual children's Christmas party

Unlike the past years in 2018, the organization didn't have to draw names because they came up with 200 bikes for kids from over ten different schools.

Corpus Christi (KIII news) — Leaders of Lulac hosted their 40th annual children's Christmas party Thursday night at Zavala Elementary.

During Thursday's event, more than 200 kids from the city's west side received free bicycles.

"It's fun to ride with her because she's my sister and there's nothing to do at home," second-grader Mia Alvarez said.

Alvarez hopes to go home with some new wheels collected by Lulac Council #1.

"Riding around places and stores," Alvarez said.

Alvarez enjoys pedaling around, but with an older sister and just one bike, there's not as much riding.

"Sometimes we'll fight over the bike I have," Alvarez said.

Unlike the past years in 2018, the organization didn't have to draw names because they came up with 200 bikes for kids from over ten different schools.

Every child including Alvarez were able to take home a bike. According to vice president Susie Saldana, it was all made possible by sponsors.

"It's not as much fun to share the bike but this one we can ride together," Alvarez said.

"Some of our kids have a hard time already, and we want to make sure that they enjoy it," vice president Susie Saldana said. "As you see these children they have smiles on their faces, they couldn't wait to come down and get a bike."

Sponsors for the Christmas party include Dr. Moore and HEB.

According to organizers, it's not all about sponsors.

"Want to thank McComb trucking the mayor donated his driver and 8-wheeler truck and brought all the bikes from academy we didn't know how we were going to get this many bikes," Saldana said.

According to organizers Jessica Gamboa and Lorie Galan Garcia, after this year's success, they want to continue the tradition.

"I'm sure now everyone is going to want to come, so we're going to have to top it next year for sure," Gamboa Garcia said.
