More than 80 streets participate in Padre Island Neighbors Mega Garage Sale

"We meet a lot of new people," said neighbor Margarita Dunseth. "You know, just talking with the people that come and buy the treasures."

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Padre Island Neighbors Mega Garage Sale on Saturday had folks getting up early in search for some hidden treasures.

More than 80 different streets on The Island participated in the event, and everything from books, toys, antiques, and even wedding dresses, could be found at the sale.

Margarita Dunseth and her husband were just one of the couples who spent their Saturday sharing their treasures with shoppers

"We meet a lot of new people," she said. "You know, just talking with the people that come and buy the treasures, I call them. Most if all, it's just fun."

Carrie Downs-Kelley and her husband are no strangers to garage sales, but she said this time was a little different -- not only because of the traffic it caused, but also because of what they were able to sell.

"We bought a storage unit that was owned by someone who owned a gift shop," she said. “I don't think we'll make much money, but that's not what we're all about. We were able to get a really nice storage unit with some very unusual items. We felt really fortunate and thought that it would be able to share those. We found out about the yard sale on The Island and 'This is perfect!' "

Downs-Kelley meets someone new at every one of her garage sales. She said that's the reason she'll continue to be a part of the community-wide event.

“It's amazing," she said. "We've had so many people come by some people that are not from the area. It's so much fun, they're so friendly and they're finding some really unique items to take with them."
