CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Steady progress is being made on the reconstruction of Bob Hall Pier, as bids for the structure have come in.
Nueces County Precinct 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney, who has been helping find outside funding for the pier, said he's happy with the bids they've received.
"Three bidders, all very qualified bidders, definitely came back within a range we can definitely make the project work," he said.
Chesney said that Callan Marine Ltd was the company that came in with the lowest bid.
"Very reputable company, has done a lot of this kind of work around the country, came in at $22,250,000," he said.
Chesney said that when it comes to the other two bidders, Russell Marine, LLC and Shoreline Foundation, Inc., it was a clear consideration.
"They were several million dollar difference," Chesney said. "I think one was in the $27 million range and one was in the $29 million range," he said.
While there's still more to do before work contracts are awarded.
Local angler Carlos Ramirez said he's enjoyed fond memories at Bob Hall Pier, and hopes to create more.
"My dad took me there, and I took my son there and now I can't take him anymore," he said.
Ramirez said that he's been holding out hope that the pier is restored to its former glory.
"Everybody would like to see it rebuilt. I didn't think it was going to be rebuilt, I thought it was gone," he said.
Chesney says that if all goes according to plan he can start getting construction awards drafted, meaning actual construction on the pier could soon begin.
