New Ingleside rental community for houses destroyed by Hurricane Harvey ready to weather future storms

The Texas General Land Office celebrated the expansion for disaster relief in South Texas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Natural disasters have a way of creating a path of destruction and while we may not know what the future holds for us, we do know that now thanks to a newly funded program, the Coastal Bend will be prepared for whatever may come our way.

Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham was in town Wednesday to celebrate a brand new multi-family rental community, Ingleside Village, that will replace homes that were destroyed in Hurricane Harvey.

Ingleside Village is just one project part of the $26 million funding from the Texas General Land Office to make our area more resilient against future storms.

"Hurricane comes in, and then you wait for the cavalry to arrive. There's no cavalry, the cavalry's what you make of it," Kleberg County Judge Rudy Madrid said. "Kleberg County is going to be a county from this point forward that does not have to rely on state and federal assistance at the time of disaster."

The checks given today will be utilized to not only replenish those that have been displaced during major storms, but will also serve as a safe house full of resources in the event we do see another major disaster.

"Over a hundred homes for new families, so wonderful to be a part of that, and then for Kleberg County, we've got three emergency shelters that we're able to bring resources to," Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said. "So, we're literally bringing tens of millions of dollars of resources to the Coastal Bend to help our communities grow the way they want to grow."

Each apartment complex will be restricted for low-income families solely for 20 years after completion and 15 years after completion of repairs. Just to ensure that those that truly need the help, have somewhere to go.
