Pothole woes hit home for local business on Savage Lane bordered by industry

"January we received over 3,000 work orders, and every work order can have multiple potholes associated with it."

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While potholes are a menace to drivers all across our area, they are causing an even bigger issue for one local business on a road surrounded by big industry.

D&C Fence Company General Manager Rich Hanner said his issues with potholes along Savage Lane go a little bit deeper.

"I've been here 12 years, and I've personally reported it within the first six months of being here," Hanner said.

When it comes to more recent requests, Hanner said his luck hasn't been the best.

"Got one here from October of 2023, pictures of the road included, closed out the same day," he said.

Hanner said that things become more complicated when he shares the street with big industrial companies.

"We've got us, we got a heavy duty rental facility across the street, there's a Valero facility across the street, then a trucking company right next to us," he said.

City of Corpus Christi Assistant Director of Streets Manuel Hernandez said his team has been working to clear some massive work loads.

"January we received over 3,000 work orders, and every work order can have multiple potholes associated with it," Hernandez said.

He said that when it comes to industrial roads, there is a line of separation.

"Pothole repair and reconstruction for industrial streets is separated and I believe council is the one that determines how those monies are spent," he said.

As for streets that are part of the Rapid Pavement Program, Hernandez said those are assessed by a firm and given a score of zero to a hundred. Streets that see the worst scores get higher priority on that list.
