South Vietnamese share their Vietnam War experience

Vietnamese soldiers share their war stories at the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport.

Corpus Christi — When it comes to the Vietnam war not many people know the perspective of the south Vietnamese soldiers who fought alongside the U.S.

Today, that changed with a panel discussion held at the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport.

Some Vietnamese soldiers found refuge in the coastal bend after leaving their country because of the Vietnam war.

Now they are sharing their stories with the community, as well as comparing them with the experiences of American soldiers.

Some people may not know, but the United States allied with South Vietnam to fight against the North Vietnamese and other communist allies.

A translator, Quoc Anh Tran conveyed for one of the veterans what is was like being in a communist country.

“Even though you are not guilty they say you are guilty,” Tran said. “Once you are guilty they can shoot you or bury you alive.”

The discussion highlighted a different aspect of the war while also spotlighting the importance of history and veterans.
