Gunman identified in incident that critically wounded CCPD officer, support continues to pour in for family

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department told 3NEWS Tuesday that 26-year-old Colton Foster is the man who shot and critically injured Officer Kyle Hicks in a domestic disturbance incident over the weekend.

Officer Hicks continues to fight for his life at a local hospital after Foster pulled out a gun and shot him during the altercation. Other responding officers then shot and killed the 26-year-old. 

The CCPD officer was responding to a call of shots fired and a domestic disturbance early Saturday at the Summer House Apartments on the city's southside when he was shot by Foster. 

Since the shooting there has been an overwhelming amount of support shown for the officer, for the department and for his family. 

Of course, the biggest thing being asked for right now are prayers.

The officer's family also set up a GoFundMe account which has soared past its $50,000 goal.

Messages of support are coming in from law enforcement agencies across the state and beyond.

Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo said our community stands united in support of the Corpus Christi Police Department during this difficult time.

"We're completely devastated by it and it is a stark reminder of the critical role that our police officers play on a daily basis," she said. "They never know what they are going to encounter." 

Hicks was among the officers who arrived at the location where they responded to a call about a disturbance.

It's where they found a 26-year-old man at the door of the apartment where a struggle ensued.

The man then shot Officer Hicks.

One of the other responding officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

"Officer will be on administrative leave as is protocol while we work through the process, going through the process of the call, the crime scene and for their mental health and making sure they're okay; it's a traumatic event," said Police Chief Mike Markle.

Hicks is a two-year veteran of the police department.

Among those offering their support are members of Chick-fil-A at Staples and McArdle.

"Officer Kyle Hicks is a cherished member of the Buentello and Chick-fil-A families. He has displayed unwavering dedication to the Corpus Christi community through the various roles he has held over the years. Please remember the Hicks and Buentello families in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult situation," the restaurant posted to social media.

Scott Leeton is the president of the Corpus Christi Police Officers Association and is also asking the community for continued prayers.

"It's in the hands of God, that is the first and foremost thing in the way of support the community can do for the officer his family and the department and the officers who are still doing their jobs day in and day out," Leeton said.

According to the GoFundMe account set up, Hicks is married to his high school sweetheart and is a father to four beautiful children.

Following the lunch hour Monday, that fundraiser effort reaching over $60,000.

"The outreach we've had from the community whether it's text, phone calls, Facebook comments have been unbelievably supportive," he said. "We've seen this from Corpus Christi before, but they have really stepped up more than I have ever seen, and it's truly appreciated by us and the officers."

State Representative Todd Hunter also reacting to the shooting, "prayers to our officer and his family. We support our law enforcement and we are here to help."
