Father of Houston man shot near Fredericksburg-area winery calls allegations he kidnapped woman 'unbelievable'

The 45-year-old Texas woman was found outside a winery off East US Highway 290 near Stonewall. The father of the man she shot called her allegations "ridiculous."

STONEWALL, Texas — A Houston man was shot and killed in the Fredericksburg area by a woman who says he kidnapped and drugged her, according to the Gillespie County Sheriff's Office.

The 45-year-old woman from Montgomery, north of Houston, called for help around 12:40 p.m. on Friday. The dispatcher said she was "quite hysterical," and "screaming," according to a recording obtained by KVUE, our sister station in Austin.

Deputies found her near a winery off East U.S. 290 near Stonewall.

She told them that she shot a man who kidnapped her and gave them a description of his vehicle. Deputies found his pickup on the other side of 290 near Jellystone Park Camp Resort. He was dead in the front seat.

The man was later identified as 49-year-old Lance Damon Reid.

“Absolutely strange and unbelievable. He’s also been a very straight arrow," the dead man's father told us.

Barry Reid said the allegations are very out of character for his son.

“Lance would never do anything like that. He wasn’t a violent person. He loved people. He got along with everybody, very sociable," Barry Reid told us. ”He certainly wouldn’t kidnap someone. That would be ridiculous."

GCSO investigators interviewed the woman again at the hospital. She told them she recently met Reid and they were on a planned weekend trip together.

Lance moved to Texas from California about three months ago for a new job. He's a married father of two but his wife stayed behind in California, according to his father.

“Well, over a month ago I talked to him ... nothing about any woman in his life or anything like that," Reid told us. "He was actually looking for a place to buy a house there and stay in Texas with his job. It’s going to be a long-term project.”

Lance's wife, Kellee Reid, sent KHOU 11 the following statement. "There is an ongoing and thorough investigation. There is a lot more information to offer. We are confident that the truth will come out and that justice will be served."

We also tried to reach out to the woman who shot Reid but she had no comment.

The investigation continues and no charges have been filed at this time.
