UIL called in for disciplinary ruling following Friday's Moody girls basketball game fight

The Lady Trojans were scheduled to play games Monday and Tuesday, but CCISD athletics director Brenda Marshall said the team cancelled those games.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The UIL will decide disciplinary action against the Moody High School girls basketball team following a fight caught on video Nov. 17 involving at least one of the team's players during McAllen's Border Bash tournament.

One UIL official said there is no timeline for that decision, but that the state's high-school athletics authority generally follows the district's recommendation for punishment.

The Lady Trojans have not played a game since Friday. They were scheduled to play Alice on Monday, and Gregory-Portland on Tuesday, but the team cancelled both match-ups, said CCISD Athletics Director Brenda Marshall.

She also said the district has appealed to the UIL for a disciplinary ruling in the matter.

Video shared with 3NEWS of the fight shows a Moody girls player running across the court after a Laredo Nixon player -- the team's opponent during the game -- following her off the court. A fight then ensued between the two.

It is unclear what led to the incident, but bystanders eventually stopped the fight, pulling the two girls apart.

McAllen ISD Community Information Specialist Mark May said Friday that officials quickly regained control of the game and declared Nixon the game's winner. Moody withdrew from the tournament and returned home.

While no arrests were made at the game, May said a Laredo Nixon player planned to press charges in the matter.

Because the students' identities are unknown, it is unclear whether any charges have been filed.
