Youngest victim in Harbor Bridge crash remains in medically induced coma

It was supposed to be a fun Memorial Day weekend but now the family of Sophia Munson is hoping she will be able to live a normal life.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A San Antonio family of four was hospitalized on Memorial Day weekend after a major accident on the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi. Thankfully three are recovering but the youngest victim, a 10-year-old, remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

It was supposed to be a fun Memorial Day weekend but now the family of Sophia Munson is hoping she will be able to live a normal life.

Authorities said the family of four was driving over the bridge when they came across a truck parked halfway in their lane. With no time to avoid the truck or room to stop, they side swiped the truck. The impact sent their vehicle spinning.

The parents and their son were able to get out of the vehicle, but their 10-year-old daughter Sophia was unconscious. She was taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital where doctors learned that she also had a stroke after the accident, which could paralyze her entire right side.

The 10-year-old underwent surgery to remove half of her skull and insert a drain to alleviate pressure on the brain, which could take three weeks according to doctors.

"Remove all the cuts, all the glass. Her nose is completely shattered," said Steven Munson, the victim's father. "They're going to have to reconstruct all her nose bone. She has, the floor of her eye socket is broken. She has a fractured lower jaw, fractured right hand, fractured right femur."

"Know the precautions," said Jacqueline Martinez, the victim's mother. "Because of this incident my daughter's life will never be the same, and neither will ours."

Sophia is currently in a medically induced coma and will continue to be in one for the next three weeks.

The family's son suffered a broken neck and a small fracture in his skull. The parents suffered just cuts and bruises.
