Longtime Robstown Pickers baseball coach stepping away from program after more than two decades

Elias Vasquez announced he is leaving the baseball program after 27 years. He spent 15 years as head coach and led the team on a 2011 state tournament run.

ROBSTOWN, Texas — Robstown Pickers baseball coach Elias Vasquez announced on Friday that he is leaving the baseball program after 27 years and 15 years as head coach.

He led the Pickers on a state tournament run in 2011 and to a co-district title last year, which included two wins over the rival Calallen Wildcats.

He was hospitalized during the Covid-19 pandemic, which put him in a coma for a month.

Vasquez said he is not sure if he will also retire from teaching and coaching but will relinquish his duties as head baseball coach after this season.
