Sinton rebounds from early playoff loss to earn rematch with Calallen

The premiere baseball rivalry in South Texas is getting renewed once again as #4 Sinton and #7 Calallen get ready to face off later this week.

But the three time defending region champion Pirates almost didn't uphold their end of the match-up, falling to Uvalde in a Game One shocker in the bi-district round before rebounding to take the next two to advance.

Sinton Coach Adrian Alaniz called that loss a potential "blessing in disguise" saying his players weren't ready for that loss to the Coyotes, but that they certainly would be for Calallen this week.

As far as the rivalry with the 'Cats, this is as automatic of a match-up as you can expect with it being the fourth straight year these two have met in the postseason. Sinton has won the previous three playoff meetings, but Calallen beat the Pirates in tournament play during the regular season, their first victory over Sinton since 2019.

The Pirates weighed in on whether this is the best rivalry in South Texas, saying, it's not even close.

"Right now I would say yes. Everybody always gets excited when you say Sinton and Calallen," said Sinton senior Nick Flores. "For the past for years it's just been an excitement, a great atmosphere and a fun game."

3News will catch up with Calallen Tuesday as the Wildcats had their baseball banquet Monday.

The series will be a home-and-home for the second straight season. Game 3 (if needed) will be a coin flip following Game 2 for either Sinton or Calallen to host.
