Lake Corpus Christi's low water levels could result in dangerous boating conditions

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, most of Nueces County is abnormally dry. That's noticeable at Lake Corpus Christi.

MATHIS, Texas — As you head out to Lake Corpus Christi for Memorial Weekend, you might notice something different: The shoreline is receding.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, most of Nueces County is abnormally dry. That's noticeable at Lake Corpus Christi.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden and District Supervisor Capt. Ben Baker said the water level at the lake is concerningly low.

"The last time you were on Lake Corpus Christi, probably isn't the same water level it is during this weekend," he said.

Baker said boaters should be extremely careful this weekend, since some areas across the lake are more shallow than usual.

"There is still a ramp open at the state park, so boaters are still able to launch as of today at that ramp," he said. "But with the water low, we want encourage boaters to watch out for obstructions in the lake."

Lake Corpus Christi Superintendent Kellyann Malkowski said, despite the low water level, officials are still expecting 3,000-5,000 people this weekend.

"When the lake levels are low, we see more folks swimming and fishing off the pier and the bank and less people boating due to those low lake levels," she said.

She encourages swimmers to wear life jackets to stay safe this weekend, even when staying in the shallow water because the water can get deep quickly.

"Lifejackets save lives," Malkowski said.

Before heading out to Lake Corpus Christi, officials said to check the weather, because that can determine the water conditions for the day.
