Portland library brings art, literature together with new public mural

Even at the library where voices are hushed, artwork can boom with expression.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Does Portland seem more colorful lately? Don't worry -- you're not imagining things.

Murals are popping up on the side of buildings and businesses, and it's all by design.

With so much growth in the community, city of Portland officials are making a push to implement these types of projects that they say reflect and protect Portland’s natural environment.

Portland library director Ginny Moses said these murals are a small part in the larger picture of beautification efforts for Portland and invites families to appreciate a mural surrounding the Bell Whittington Public Library.

“We’re bringing art into the building,” she said. “It’s on a grand scale, and it’s like nothing we’ve done before.”

Moses hopes the city's latest mural, which is set to be finished before Thanksgiving, will have people will stopping in their tracks before opening the building’s doors.

“The silhouettes against the colorful background represent readers from birth to senior citizens,” she said.

Other areas around town with completed murals are the city’s Senior Center, and Greens & Things.

“The colors are just so bright and lovely, they make you happy,” Moses said. “This is the visual art that’s going to be a whole new era for us to have this in various areas in the city.”

Even at the library where voices are hushed, artwork can boom with expression.

“I haven’t seen a library that has anything like this,” she said.
