CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — What started as a routine traffic stop in Freer turned into a massive meth bust as a Sullivan City teen was caught smuggling 111 pounds of crystal meth inside his truck.
17-year-old Joel Reyna was driving his truck in Freer when he was stopped by a Duval County Deputy Sheriff who requested a search of his vehicle. Reyna consented, which led to the discovery of two plastic bundles of what the deputy suspected to be drugs hidden under the truck's center console dash.
Deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents towed the truck to Freer's westside border patrol checkpoint and conducted a deeper search with the help of an X-ray machine. The search produced 103 bundles of crystal meth hidden throughout the truck that weighed about 111 pounds and had a street value of over $3.5 million.
The crystal meth was turned over to the 229th Judicial District HIDTA Task Force for processing.
Reyna is now under arrest at the Duval County Jail with a charge of manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance over 400 grams.
