Teen driver who died Sunday after driving through red light, hitting power pole identified

Investigators said 17-year-old Marissa Chavana was speeding on Wooldridge Road when she crashed into a metal power pole. Her identity was released Tuesday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Update: The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the teenager who died in a single-car accident over the weekend as Marissa Chavana. She died at Bay Area hospital Sunday due to blunt force trauma injuries to the body. 

A 17-year-old girl is dead after crashing her vehicle into power pole on Corpus Christi's South Side on Sunday afternoon. 

The driver's identity has not been released.

Corpus Christi Police Department officers said they were dispatched to Wooldridge Road and Manuel Lane shortly after 4 p.m., where the found the girl in the vehicle.  

They were forced to close several traffic lanes, from Manuel Lane to Twin Drive, while medics worked to remove the driver from her vehicle.

She was eventually taken to a local hospital, where she later died. 

Investigators said the girl caused the single-vehicle accident after speeding down Wooldridge and driving through a red light at Cimarron Boulevard. They said she then failed to stay in a single traffic lane and eventually hit a metal power pole.
