County leaders extend separation date for Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District amid funding concerns

One of the core issues the county is looking to address is the status of the Robstown Clinic located in the Johnny Calderon Housing Complex.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — New developments in the break-up of the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District as county leaders decided to move the final separation date in order to get more funding.

Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said that since services outside of city limits, having ample time to secure the necessary funding is crucial.

"They asked for September 30, end of fiscal year, and we were happy to accommodate," she said.

Scott said that it all boils down to who will be in charge of what.

"We will provide additional services and take over what services are required through the county at the Calderon building, through vendors that we are going to go out for," she said.

Scott said that the new separation date was prompted by finance. She said that getting the proper funding is crucial for a move of this size.

"You know, the county, we are only funded by property tax. We have to go after grants for anything else. For repairs and buildings like that," she said.

One of the core issues the county is looking to address is the status of the Robstown Clinic located in the Johnny Calderon Housing Complex. The clinic being a resource for those in rural Nueces County, except they could only visit once a week.

"The county feels like there is a need for more days. And having more time to come in if you need services," she said.

Public Health Director Fauzia Khan said that while there is a new separation date, it is still business as usual.

"There is no change of services for the residents of Corpus Christi. We will continue to provide services both clinical and public health services, through our Horne location, Calderon Clinic and mobile clinic until September," she said.

Khan said the city and county are working closely to navigate the separation, including regular meetings to make sure they're all on the same page.

"We have shared a draft agreement with county officials. Which they will take to commissioners court. Again, that agreement will be till September 30," she said.
