Del Mar College students and staff wear denim on Wednesday to support sexual assault victims

The denim movement started in the 1990s to bring awareness to the threat of sexual assault.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Students and staff at Del Mar College wore denim on Wednesday as a symbol to bring awareness to the threat of sexual assault.

The denim movement started back in the 1990s when a man got out of an assault charge by saying he could never have removed the victim's clothing alone because her jeans were too tight.

He argued that it implied consent.

Since then, people all over the world have been recognizing sexual violence by wearing jeans as a message of support.

"So many people are keeping these things quiet just because they don't think that they can come forward and they won't get that support that they need," Licensed Professional Counselor at Del Mar College Lisa Olmos said. "And so having these resources, having people show that they will be there for them, In support of them is so important, so that they don't have to suffer in silence anymore they can get the help that they need and deserve."

Del Mar College is also offering a free self-help platform for students and staff to help cope with such challenges, you can download 'TAO' Therapy Assistance Online on your mobile device.
