Election Day: What you need to know before heading to the polls

Political Analyst Bill Chriss says Proposition A is what will most likely drive people to the polls.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — There’s typically a lot happening Election Day: traffic, long lines, and a lot of waiting around.

You don’t want to be standing in line and realize you forgot something. So here’s what you should have before heading out the door.

Make sure you have a governmental ID, like a driver’s license. A concealed handgun license will also work.

There is a total of 47 polling locations.  Voters registered in Nueces county may cast their ballot at any of these voting centers on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

You will not be able to take out your cell phone once you are voting. 3NEWS political analyst Bill Chriss suggests taking a piece of paper and pen with you for notes, especially because this is a proposition election. He advises making your decisions before going to vote.

“If they want to vote on more than one of them, or if they want to vote on the constitutional amendments,” Chriss said. “It’s important to keep straight in your mind which ones you’re voting and which one’s you’re voting against. And so you are allowed to take a piece of paper in the voting booth if you want to. Actually, you’re not allowed to take your phone in, your cell phone so you should write down what you want to do rather than rely on your cell phone.”

Chriss says Proposition A is what will most likely drive people to the polls. It is a recommendation and method for repurposing a one quarter sales tax that was passed by voters some time ago and that was used to fund downtown improvements like the seawall renovation. The city is required to determine a way to repurpose that tax.

“Proponents of Proposition A say this is a good way to use these tax monies to create a convention center hotel, to expand the convention center, create economic development," Chriss said. "Opponents of Proposition A say there was insufficient public input in the process. Many opponents want to see the quarter sales tax completely go away. And of course people who are already involved in the tourist industry, such as owners of current hotels are asking questions like ‘why are we going to subsidize a hotel down at the convention center, when my hotel is not being subsidized by the government.”

Chriss added that this is a strongly contested proposition, he anticipates that it will drive voter turnout.

Text “vote” to 361.855.6397 for any questions you may have. And remember, RTA is offering free rides to any polling location; just tell them you are headed to the polls.
