Ever wondered how to protest your property tax appraisal? Here's what you need to know

Officials say providing evidence to back your claims is important.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — You may have already received your property tax appraisal notice in the mail and there's a good chance you're not happy about it.

However, residents do have options to protest their property tax appraisals.

Chase Koska, Managing Partner at Resolute Property Tax Solutions said that one thing residents need to do when the go to their appraisal district is show significant evidence.

"You have an old roof, and outdated kitchen, the county doesn't know what you have in your home until they see pictures of it," he said.

Koska said that hiring someone to protest on your behalf can also help in clearing up any misconceptions.

"The appraisal district can't, in the year that you are appealing, they can't raise the value on you," he said. "'Oh we valued you at $300,000 when in actuality, it's $400,000,' They're not gonna do that."

George Clower, Vice President of The Clower Company, said getting help doesn't have to be difficult.

"In my experience they only charge you based on what they save you on, so it's important to think about the future because you know next year they're going to be hitting you with that increase," Clower said.

For those interested in learning more about appraising their property taxes, there will be three workshops coming up. The first will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Flour Bluff High School cafeteria. There will also be one April 26, in Robstown at the Calderon Building and one Saturday, May 11, in Port Aransas. For more information on these workshops click here.

3NEWS also spoke with officials with the Padre Island Business Association, who will be hosting a free educational seminar on how to protest property values. That event will take place Tuesday, April 30, at the Island Presbyterian Church.
