Local first responders get to practice hazardous-materials protocols during drill Friday

Green-and-yellow smoke was seen out in the areas as a fake chemical release was put together.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The city of Corpus Christi held a hazardous-material drill at the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant on Friday.

The three-day training was hosted by Corpus Christi Fire Department and gives first responders the opportunity to test their response.

Green-and-yellow smoke was seen out in the areas as a fake chemical release was put together in order to let first responders and other organizations put together an action plan and prepare for these kinds of incidents.

"We teach first responders what to do in case of an emergency and what not to do around real equipment,” said Union Pacific Manager of Hazardous Materials Cristofer Burch. “It's vital that all local first responders understand that a trained enrollment is different from a real call, but some can be easy, and some can be very difficult."

First responders are always preparing and looking at how to improve their strategies to keep the community safe, and this form of training is done on a larger scale to build more comfort when it comes to handling any emergency that may arise.
