Corpus Christi applies for new desal funding due to inflation

Council has approved plans to accept a $220 million loan from the Texas Water Development Board and the city will have to come up with the rest.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Editor's Note: The story has been corrected to clarify that the funding the city is searching for is for the full desalination plant.

The City of Corpus Christi is moving forward on plans for a desal plant starting with efforts to find money to pay for the construction of the plant.

The official facility will produce up to 30 million gallons of water per day.

According to City Manager Peter Zanoni, City Council has approved plans to accept a $220 million low-interest loan from the Texas Water Development Board. The money will help fund construction of the desalination plant.

The city is exploring all funding options, and Zanoni says the price tag is still up in the air thanks to inflation.

"We know that inflation, especially construction inflation has gone up quite a bit since the initial estimate some 5-6 years ago," he said.

Zanoni also said the city put in another application for a SWIFT loan for the difference between the $220 million and the new cost.

In the meantime, the city is asking for contractors' input on the building of the facility.

Next week the city will host a special Contractor Engagement Day at the Texas State Aquarium. The event will invite contractors from all over to ask questions about the project.
