Padre Island residents advocate for new skatepark

The skateboarding community attended the city council meeting Tuesday to voice the need for a safe area to skate.

PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Several people showed up at Tuesday's City Council meeting to advocate for a skatepark on Padre Island.

Currently, the Island does not have a safe area for skaters, but resident Cheryl Segrest believes that could change.

"I saw kind of preliminary phases of Commodores Park and I was thinking to myself there is a big empty space out there that would be perfect for a skatepark for our youth to enjoy," Segrest said.

The council members listened as multiple advocates, including some young skateboarders, spoke in favor of a skatepark.

"It's really dangerous to watch them out there skateboarding and doing all that kind of stuff on the streets and at the IGA parking lot," said Kim Erwin, grandmother of a skater.

Corpus Christi accounts for 11 percent of the total skateboard and skateboard equipment sales in the state which is similar to other large Texas cities.

Longtime skater and found of PonyBoy Skate Company, Adam Rios, said a project like this could benefit the whole community.

"When I was growing up skating in parking lots and street, the accidents that could happen," Rios said. "We're trying is to advocate for safe space for every child in the community."

Parents of the young skateboarders have created a petition for the Padre Island Skatepark and in just 48 hours over 400 people have signed it.
