CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The first Adopt-a-Beach of the year is set to take place this weekend.
Volunteers who would like to help maintain our area beaches can head over to either Cole Park, Aransas Pass, Port-A or the Packery Flats.
The Coastal Bend Bays Foundation says volunteers are the heart of the program and that more than 500,000 volunteers have picked up roughly 12 tons of debris over the last 38 years.
"One of the most common items you can pick up are cigarette buds. It's made of plastic and animals eat that," said Jace Tunnell, a trustee with the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation. "All of these things can be dangerous not only in the water but on land as well."
The all-ages event takes place rain or shine.
If you are planning on helping clean up the beach -- you can simply show up or register online via the main signup page.
Don't worry if you can't make it out this weekend --the clean-up takes place three times a year.
