"25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," Del Mar Drama to present first musical since COVID-19 pandemic

Professor Carl Yowell with Del Mar Drama says it's the first time the program has presented a musical since 2018, after enrollment dropped due to COVID-19.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It's not your typical musical, ladies and gentlemen.

In addition to hearing one of Broadway's latest and lesser known, but widely produced musicals, audiences will also have the chance to participate in Del Mar Drama's presentation of the "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," a musical comedy that follows the journeys of six quirky and driven young people who pursue the sport of the spelling bee.

Director Carl Yowell says this will be the first musical the department has produced since pre-pandemic.

"We lost about a year to the COVID pandemic, so that affected our enrollments, and we're just now getting to the size where we can mount a full-scale musical."
