Memorial Day: Safe travel tips from DPS

DPS Sgt. Harold Mallory joined us on First Editon with information that folks should be aware of before heading out on the roadways this weekend.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Memorial Day means family fun for a lot of folks who will be enjoying a well-deserved three-day weekend.

It also means a lot of people will be driving on Coastal Bend highways.

DPS Sgt. Harold Mallory joined us on First Editon with information that folks should be aware of before heading out on the roadways this weekend.

1. Wear your seatbelt- they save lives. Mallory says that all DPS datapoints suggest that safety belts are a great way to improve your odds of surviving roadway accidents.

While you can't always control what other drivers are going to do, you can take this step to keep you safer on the road. Remember to always 'Click it or Ticket'.

2. Operation CARE: Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort- More troopers will be out on the roadways this weekend, and they will be looking for violations that could result in crashes that could cause injuries or fatalities. Mallory said that these additional troopers will be looking for drivers who are operating while impaired, speeding, distracted, or who are not wearing seatbelts.

3. iWatch Texas- download the app or make a report hereAs you travel the highways, you may see some things that you are suspicious of but are not sure what exactly is happening. Mallory used the example of potential human smuggling cases that could be seen on the roadway this memorial weekend.

Remember- this is a tipline that you can also text, but it does not replace 911 emergency services. If you see an emergency happening, you should call the police.

You can make a report online in the link provided above, or over the phone by contacting 844-643-2251.
