AEP work causes 15-minute incremental closures on Island, causing traffic delays

Road closures will be ongoing until Feb. 27.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Work to upgrade electricity transmission lines is causing major traffic delays on the Island.

The major electricity transmission line replacement along State Highway 361 and Park Road 22 is due to aging and "poor condition" of current line, AEP officials said.

"The existing transmission line is in poor condition due to corrosion and must be replaced with a larger and more efficient load service line," officials said in a statement.

From 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily, roads in the area where work is happening will be closed in 15-minute increments. At the end of each 15 minutes, the road will be fully reopened to allow traffic to clear, then another 15 minute closure will begin.

Work can only be completed during the day due to crews having to work up to 125 feet in the air. In all, 3.8 miles of high voltage transmission lines are being replaced.

Currently, work is underway on the west side of Park Road 22 at the intersection of Park Road 22 and State Highway 361, traveling south approximately 1.09 miles to the intersection of Park Road 22 and Whitecap Boulevard and continuing south approximately 0.13 miles past Whitecap Boulevard.

Intermittent road closures are scheduled for the following dates:

  • January 28 through January 31
  • February 8 through February 9
  • February 14 through February 18
  • February 25 through February 27

Drivers can expect to see construction signage and flaggers near the worksite, where crews will be using utility trucks and other heavy equipment to position and replace the wires.
