Wild pigs cause fatal crash in Jim Wells County: two dead, one injured

A female driver noticed and tried to avoid hitting a group of the animals in the road, which resulted in her colliding with a truck with two adults and one child.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Two women are dead and one man is seriously injured after a group of wild pigs caused a head-on collision on FM 2507 around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night in Jim Wells County.

Texas Department of Public Safety Public Information Sgt. Harold "Rob" Mallory identified the two women as 20-year-old Criselda Ramirez and 30-year-old Crystal Botello in a news release Wednesday morning.

Ramirez was driving a 2012 Dodge Caliber, with Botello in the passenger seat, in the southbound lane of FM 2507 when she saw a group of wild pigs in the road, the release states.

While trying and failing to avoid the pigs, her car veered into the northbound lane, where she hit a 2017 Dodge Rebel Ram 1500. Both women died at the scene. DPS said Ramirez was wearing her seatbalt; Botello was not.

The truck's 24-year-old driver, Libardo Carillo III, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to Bay Area Hospital via air ambulance with serious injuries.

The truck's other passengers, 23-year-old Darion Almedia and a 3-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries and were treated at CHRISTUS  Spohn Hospital - Alice.

DPS said Carillo was not wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation into the accident is still underway.
